Solar Eclipse and Your Pet: How to Keep Your Furry Friend Safe

As Canadians eagerly await the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8th 2024, many pet owners are wondering how to ensure their beloved companions stay safe during this celestial event.

Here are some tips to help you keep your furry friends protected and comfortable during the solar eclipse.

Understanding Pet Behavior During the Eclipse

Dr. Karen Ward, chief veterinary officer at the Toronto Humane Society, emphasizes that while the eclipse itself may not pose significant health risks to pets like dogs and cats, the accompanying changes in environment and human behavior can be unsettling for them. Large crowds and noise associated with eclipse-viewing events can cause anxiety in pets, leading to behavioral changes.

During the eclipse, your pet may exhibit nocturnal behaviors or signs of increased anxiety.

Just like zoo animals observed during a solar eclipse in 2017, pets may display behaviors such as getting ready for bed or showing signs of nervousness.

Keeping Your Pet Safe

The Toronto Humane Society recommends keeping pets indoors during the eclipse to avoid any confusion or distress caused by changes in light and noise levels. Pets tend to pick up on their owners' energy, so it's essential to create a calm and comfortable environment for them at home.Provide your pet with their favorite bedding or treats to help them feel secure during the eclipse.

While protective eyewear is essential for humans to safeguard against the sun's intense brightness, pets instinctively avoid looking directly at the sun, making protective eyewear unnecessary for them.

Avoiding Crowds and Sticking to Routine

As eclipse-viewing events may attract large crowds, it's best to leave your pet at home in their familiar environment.

Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, a veterinarian medical advisor for Rover, advises against bringing pets to eclipse viewing parties, especially if they are prone to anxiety.Stick to your pet's routine as much as possible, providing reassurance and distraction if needed. If you do decide to bring your pet along, ensure they have access to food and water and keep them on a leash to prevent them from getting spooked by the excitement or the eclipse itself.

By following these tips, you can ensure that your furry friend stays safe and comfortable during the solar eclipse while you enjoy this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.
